When Is Open Rhinoplasty Preferred?

When Is Open Rhinoplasty Preferred?

Open rhinoplasty is a surgical approach that provides a wider view of the internal structures of the nose. The choice of technique is determined by examination, based on the nose's existing structure and the scope of the planned work. The headings below are for general information.

What is the open technique?

In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the columella, the strip of tissue separating the two nostrils, so the skin can be lifted gently and the underlying cartilage and bone become directly visible. This broad view may allow for detailed measurement and adjustment. The incision sits on the underside of the columella and may tend to become less noticeable over time.

In which situations may it come up?

The open technique may be preferred for complex structural irregularities, cases requiring advanced tip work, and revision cases where a previous nasal surgery has been performed. In such situations, seeing the structures directly may support planning. Which technique is suitable varies from person to person and is assessed following examination.

Comparison with the closed technique

In closed rhinoplasty the incisions remain inside the nostrils, leaving no external scar, though the surgeon's field of view is more limited. The open technique offers a wider view while involving a small incision on the columella. Each approach has situations where it may be appropriate; the choice is made together with the physician according to the structure of the nose and individual needs.
