When Is Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) Considered in Chronic Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a common condition that occurs when the air-filled spaces within the facial bones (the sinuses) become inflamed. When complaints recur or persist over a long period, surgery may be considered among the treatment options. The headings below are for general information and are not a substitute for an examination.

What are chronic and recurring sinusitis?

When complaints such as nasal congestion, postnasal drip, a feeling of pressure in the face and a reduced sense of smell persist for a long time or return frequently, this may be described as chronic or recurring sinusitis. In some people, nasal polyps may accompany the picture. Diagnosis is assessed together with the examination and, where needed, imaging findings.

When may surgery be considered?

In managing sinusitis, medication and appropriate nasal care are usually recommended first. When an adequate response is not obtained with suitable medical treatment or complaints continue, endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) may come up as an option. The decision for surgery is made individually, evaluating the complaints, examination and imaging results together.

The general principle of the FESS method

In functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), the procedure is performed through the inside of the nose with the help of an endoscope, without leaving an external scar. The aim is to open the blocked sinus openings so as to improve the ventilation and natural drainage of the sinuses. The healing process and outcome may vary from person to person; details are planned after an examination with the physician.
