Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to reshape the external appearance and/or internal structure of the nose. Alongside aesthetic concerns, functional aspects such as breathing may be considered together during planning. The approach that suits each person is determined by examination, based on the nasal structure and expectations.
Aesthetic rhinoplasty is mainly concerned with the appearance of the nose, while functional surgery addresses structural problems that affect breathing. These two goals can often be handled together in the same session. Which approach is appropriate varies from person to person and is determined by examination.
In the closed technique the incisions stay inside the nose, while the open technique adds a small incision on the columella (the strip between the nostrils). Each approach has situations where it may be more suitable. The technique to be preferred is determined by examination, based on the nasal structure and the planned procedure.
Breathing function is taken into account during planning; when needed, structural issues such as the septum can be assessed in the same session. The aim is to consider appearance and breathing together. Results vary from person to person.
Septoplasty is a functional procedure that aims to improve breathing by correcting deviations in the wall between the two nostrils (the septum). On its own it is not an aesthetic surgery intended to change the external appearance of the nose. If desired, it can be planned together with aesthetic corrections in the same session; suitability is determined by examination.
